Poros is an island of serenity, romance and relaxation.
It is overgrown with pine trees that reach its steep shores or sandy beaches.

Poros consists of two islets, Spheria and Calabria, which were united in the old times with a piece of land width of 150 meters, in the area where today is the Gymnasium.

In 1877 a small canal, 125 meters long, 4.80 meters wide and 1-2 meters deep was opened on this isthmus. Boats can pass through this canal from the Bay of Progimnastirio towards Askeli for the port of Poros or Neorio.

TOURING THE TOWN OF POROS ISLAND

On the volcanic islet of Spheria, which is rocky and anhydrous but very beautiful and picturesque, it is built amphitheatrically the city of Poros on its two hills.

The beach houses are imposing neoclassical houses, usually in oche colors as opposed to the simple two-storey white houses usually found in "Brinia" , "Milos" , "Punta" and "Casteli" .

The first homes were built on the first hill during the year 1463 in the area surrounding the famous Clock of Poros, today's "Casteli".

Over time, the settlement expanded to both hills and created the areas of Punta, Brinia and Milos. After the Asia Minor disaster, the area which is located after the small canal at the beginning of the Calavria, it was inhabited by refugees from Asia Minor.

Poros beach starts from "Stavros" area and reaches the west pier of the new port of Poros, in the Progimnastirio and is 1,020 meters long.

Along the pier the visitor encounters a series of tourist shops, cafes, restaurants, taverns, taverns, grill shops, many bars with Greek and foreign music and the cinema.

Along the port you can see the Cultural Center, the Exhibition Center, the Xatzopoulios Library, the Archaeological Museum, the Town Hall, all the banks and services of the island.

In the center of the port is the departure point for buses and taxis. From there the boats to the nearby coasts and Galata also begin.

At the port-beach you will also find tourist agencies, ticket agencies for speedboats, pharmacies, tech stores, clothing and footwear stores, supermarkets, minimarket, fish market, motorcycles and bicycles rental shops, newspaper kiosk, boat refueling shops and any other shop you imagine.

Poros beach, almost all day, but especially in the evenings, is full of life and is full of people who take a stroll at the pier by the sea.

From the Town Hall Square begins a steep street with cobblestone steps passing through the white houses drowned in bougainvilleas, and reaches all the way to St. George's Church.

At the small stone paved square of St. George you can distinguish the preserved neoclassical building of Daimezis built of gray and red stone, Griva's shop with its large doors and very beautiful interior decoration. Also you can see the emblematic 200 years old plane tree beneath of which lies a small chapel. A small number of other shops complete the picturesque view of the square.

At this small square the road branches off and to the left goes through picturesque alleys and stairs to the Roloi (Clock) area, while to the right the road goes up to Brinia and Milos.

From the Clock (Roloi) the view is amazing and the sunset, with the sun setting among the mountains of "Kimomeni", unique. From here you can admire the slopes of Adera, the Lemon Tree Forest, the port of Poros and the village of Trizina.

Going towards Brinia and Milos we stroll through flowered courtyards and white two storey houses.

In every plateau we come across, the views of the bay and the port are unique. You don't know what to admire first because Poros is known for its unique color and atmosphere.

At the top of the hill is an old windmill, which supplies water to the city and lies next to the area "Deksameni". After "Milos" the hill continues with sparse vegetation and amazing views. There is a path that crosses the hill, starting from "Milos", leading to its southeast end, above the Chapel of Stavros.

To the right of "Milos" begins a path leading to the chapel of Agios Athanasios. From here, the view across the bay and the island is the best.

Going back, we descend the stairs at the top of the hill and follow the road to the right to reach "Rukutima", an elevation overlooking the Progimnastirio area, Kanali and Askeli. We continue and arrive at the Progimnastirio, which was home to Othona's cottage. Until recently at the area was being done the classification and training of navy sailors.

TOUR TO THE NORTHWEST BEACHES OF POROS

Next to the football court of Progimnastirio lies the small canal that separates Spheria from Calavria. Here the road coming from the harbor branches.

Turning left towards northwest, we come across the area of Perlia , a beautiful coastal area with picturesque tavernas and very nice complexes with Apartments and Rooms to let.

The coastal road passes from Villa Galini, a romantic neoclassical villa that hosted various famous writers and artists, and reaches "Mikro Neorio" and after 500 meters "Megalo Neorio". Mikro Neorio and Megalo Neorio are organized sandy beaches with umbrellas, sunbeds, small canteen and pine trees reaching to the sea.

The area of Neorio is ideal for family tourism, relaxed vacations and is located opposite the Peloponnese in Poros bay.

The coastal road continues and reaches the beach "Love's Bay" which is a very romantic bay, where the visitor can enjoy its green and turquoise waters, under the pine trees! This is an organized beach with umbrellas, sun loungers, coffee tables and a canteen.

A little further from "Love's Bay" lies the "Russian Naval Station", a beautiful and picturesque bay, which has been characterized as a historically preserved monument because of its great architectural and historical interest.

Opposite the "Russian Naval Station" is the islet of Daskalio, which hosts many weddings in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

At the beaches of "Love's Bay" and "Russian Naval Station" are docked many small and large boats, which give more life to the beach.

Finally, the coastal road reaches to a secluded pebble beach, named "Gerolimenas" which is facing "Petra" islet.

TOUR TO THE SOUTH EAST BEACHES OF POROS

We return again to the area of the small Canal, after Progimnastirio, as we coming from the port, and we go right following the coastal road.

The first beach we meet at the beginning of our course is the "Kanali beach", a beautiful adn organized sandy beach in Askeli, with umbrellas and sunbeds with tables.

After Kanali beach we continue the road and reach "Askeli", an organized sandy beach with a beach bar, beach volleyball court, tables with chairs, sun beds, umbrellas, showers, changing rooms, toilets, ski school and water sports facilities. On the beach there is a space to play rackets and tall eucalyptuses that create shade for those who do not like the sun.

After the "Sirene Blue Resort" Hotel, there is the Zoodochou Pigi Monastery , founded in 1720 by Metropolitan Iakovo the second.

Beneath the hill where the Zoodochos Pigi Monastery is, lies the "Monastiri beach", a quiet and organized beach with crystal clear waters, next to a pine forest, with sunbeds, umbrellas and a canteen. The area is ideal for water sports and scuba diving.

TOUR IN THE HIGHLANDS OF POROS

We return to the small canal, after the football court of Progimnastirio area, and go slightly to the left in "Sinikismos", an area which was first inhabited by refugees from Asia Minor.

After "Sinikismos" we reach the chapel of Panagitsa (Holly Mary), located between a lush ravine with plane trees and running waters. It is one of the most beautiful sites in Poros, where many weddings and baptisms take place and is being celebrated every year at July the 2nd.

Continuing along the course we find the chapel of Prophet Elias. A little further down the road, the road branches off towards "Foussa" and "Vagionia" on the left, and "Palatia area", where the Temple of Poseidon is, on the right.

Vagionia is a quiet, sandy and pebbly beach organized on the northeast of the island, ideal for tranquil vacations and all kinds of fishing, especially underwater. The beach is located on the bay of Vagionia, facing the open sea, opposite Aegina and Piraeus and has sun loungers, umbrellas and a cafe snack bar. In Vagionia there is a sunken ancient city and at the bottom there are still visible the paved roads and foundations of ancient houses.

The Temple of Poseidon was a reputed sacred asylum that welcomed the persecuted. The orator Demosthenes was the most famous asylum seeker here, fleeing from Athens, occupied by the Macedonians. Here he drank poison and was buried in the sanctuary. The Sanctuary of Poseidon in Poros is one of the most important monuments of antiquity, of great importance to Poros today.

After the Temple of Poseidon the route continues, the road descends to the sea and intersects with the coastal road leading to the Monastery.

At the junction we turn left onto the Monastery and turn right at Askeli, we reach the Kanali and the small canal that connects Calavria with Spheria.
